Leslie C. Berlowitz is former president and chief executive officer of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She is co-editor of three books, including America in Theory (1988, Oxford University Press) with Denis Donoghue and Louis Menand, and Greenwich Village: Culture and Counterculture (1990, Rutgers University Press) with Richard Eric Beard.
In his early work Bernard Malamud used Yiddish constructions and words reminiscent of the Jewish folk tradition of Eastern Europe. But with his first novel, The Natural, he embraced a Midwestern hero, the American pastoral, and a pastime he loved: baseball.
